How To Monetize Your Website with Google AdSense

Google AdSense is one of the most popular methods for monetizing websites, and despite what you may have heard, it can still be an excellent way to support your content production efforts. In order to get the best results, it’s important to try different advertisement strategies. In this article, I will give you an introduction to AdSense and show you how to get the most out of this ad service.

These recommendations are based on my own experience with multiple websites.

About Google AdSense

The AdSense concept is based on the idea of showing advertisements which fit the content of your website as much as possible. For example, if your website is about shoes, you are likely to see shoe-related ads. The AdSense service examines your page content to find out which ads fit the interest of your readers best. The better your site and advertisements match, the better the results will be.

Ad Formats

AdSense offers multiple ad formats from which website publishers can choose. There is a large range of widely used ad formats, such as skyscrapers, leaderboards and rectangles. These banner formats feature both text ads and graphical ads. You can adjust the font and colors of text ads so they match your website design or to make them stand out more. Graphical ads can be static images, Flash animated banners or modern HTML5 animated banners.
Of course you can select mobile banners too. This banner type is designed for display on smaller screens of mobile devices, such as smartphones. If you have a responsive website and would like to make your banners responsive as well, you can choose responsive ads. AdSense will look at the available space within your website layout and automatically display the best banner size. Other than that, AdSense gives you the option to use link units. This banner type is based on text links and its font and colors can be adjusted as well.

Applying for Google AdSense

In order to display Google AdSense banners on your website, you need to apply for the AdSense program first, which can be done through the AdSense website . The review process takes a couple of days. Google will evaluate your website to see whether it complies with the program policies and whether they will allow you as a new AdSense publisher. Please consult the Google AdSense website to learn more about the rules and the registration procedure.

Let’s Get Started

As soon as you are enrolled in the program, you can start publishing AdSense ads on your website(s). Using the AdSense administration panel, you can create a new ad. First, enter a name, for example your site name and the ad size (a good idea if you publish multiple sites so it’s easier to identify your ads). Then select the ad size, the ad type (text and/or graphical ads) and adjust the font and color scheme if applicable. For analytics purposes, you can create channels and assign ads to them.
You can also determine what you want AdSense to do in case no banners are available, for example showing a blank space, a solid color or a custom backup ad. For almost any website Google has a lot of ads available, so in most cases you won’t see these banner placeholders. After that step the HTML code you need to run ads on your website is displayed. Copy the code and paste it in the appropriate place within your website template.

Ad Statistics

Google AdSense offers extensive statistics on the usage of the advertisements on your website. You can see the number of ad views and ad clicks, for example. Depending on the type of ad, AdSense pays you for either ad impressions (CPI) or ad clicks (CPC). In the next part of this article I will provide you with tips on how to optimize the number of impressions and clicks.

How to Get the Most out of AdSense

One of the most important things when publishing AdSense ads is to use an acceptable number of ads. Google allows up to three banners and three link units on each page. In my opinion, the number of banners you should publish depends on the amount of content on your page. For example, if your webpage includes a lot of content (comparable to a page from a printed newspaper) it’s no problem to display the maximum amount of banners, especially when they are integrated well into the page content. After all, you don’t want to lose visitors due to aggressive ad placements – for example, if the user has to scroll past a couple of banners to reach the ‘real’ content of the webpage.
While it may be tempting to maximize your ad performance, it’s important to consider the user experience too. Users visit your website because they are interested in your content, but at the same time you would like to receive the most revenue from those visits. The key to success is to place ads on places where users spend the most time during their visit: next to or within your main content and near the navigation parts. Important locations are for example the main menu and the spot at the end of your page content. By doing so you can give your visitors what they want while also getting what you want.
Banner placement shouldn’t be an afterthought. I recommend thinking about banner placement when designing your website layout. In general, these are the best performing ad formats, sorted by proportion:
Banner typeBanner size(s)
Leaderboards728×90 and 970×90
Rectangle banners250×250, 300×250 and 336×280
Skyscrapers120×600, 160×600 and 300×600
Horizontal link units728×15 and 468×15
Vertical link units160×90, 180×90 and 200×90

Example of Ads On a Typical Content Page

A typical content site consists of a header featuring a logo, a main navigation menu, a content article, and a page footer. In the image below you can see a couple of ad placements that I would suggest in such cases. Which banner size you choose depends on the available space within your website layout.
Don’t display a banner as the first element on your webpage. It’s better to display your site header first, for example a logo, a search box and the main menu. If you display a banner as the first element, users will ignore that banner and scroll down automatically.
Because the main menu is a very important way to interact with your site, your visitors will use it frequently. As that part of your site receives so much attention, it’s a good idea to display an AdSense banner next to it, for example below the main menu to keep your website header neat and tidy.
On some websites it’s profitable to display a horizontal AdSense link unit below the main menu. Link units consist of text links that fit the look and feel of your main menu, which is frequently a horizontal link list as well. You will receive the best results by adjusting the colors of the link unit so they match your website layout.
The space below your horizontal main menu is also a great spot to display a leaderboard banner. This banner will be viewed above the main content of your webpage, so in most cases it will be visible without scrolling (visible above the fold). The user will notice the banner when he scans the webpage to see where the main content starts. When he starts to look at the main content, the leaderboard banner will be within eyesight.

Content Area

Rectangle banners such as the 250×250, 300×250 and 336×280 are also strong performers. Thanks to their size they can be integrated within your webpage content, for example aligned to the upper right corner of your article.
On my own websites, I learned that the link unit could be profitable if placed well. As this banner type looks like it is part of the webpage, it can give great results, for example when displaying a link unit at the end of an article. When a user finishes reading an article they enjoyed, it’s likely they will click on one of the links in the link unit to learn more about the same topic. Pay attention to making it seamless, but don’t try to fool the user into thinking the links are a part of the actual website – not only will Google ban you if they look at your page, it doesn’t make for a good experience for your readers and they’ll stop coming back. If your article has a white background, it works well to give the link unit a white border and white background so it blends well in your site layout. Besides that, you can choose from a couple of fonts so the AdSense banners have the same look and feel as your website. This layout strategy applies to other banner sizes as well.

Column Next to Content Area

Most websites have a smaller column to the left or right, featuring an overview of the latest or most popular articles, additional content or other messages. Such columns, which are positioned next to the main content, are a great spot for displaying ads, for example vertically oriented banners such as the 120×600, 160×600 and 300×600 skyscrapers.

Show Smaller Banners in Ad Spaces

I recommend allowing Google AdSense to display smaller banners in ad spaces that are actually meant for larger banners. For example, the 336 x 280 ad space can display a 300 x 250 banner as well. The same applies to the 970 x 90 ad space: it can show a 728 x 90 banner without problems. In such cases the smaller banners will be displayed in the center of the ad space so that everything still looks good. By enabling this option you receive banners from a bigger banner pool, meaning higher revenue.

Mobile Banner in Mobile Version

As more and more people visit websites using their smartphone, it’s a good idea to display the AdSense mobile banner in the mobile version of your website, for example beneath the mobile navigation menu.

Page-level Ads

In April 2016, Google introduced AdSense’s next generation ads called ‘page-level ads’. These ads are specifically designed for use on mobile websites and show ads automatically in the right format and at the right time. Page-level ads are only shown when they are most valuable; Google determines this for your visitor automatically.
Page-level ads are available as anchor/overlay ads (fixed horizontal banners at the bottom of the screen) and vignette ads (full screen banners). You only have to include a piece of code in the pages where you would like these ads to appear. Page-level ads don’t count towards the page ad limit. If your website has a mobile version, I recommend to use at least the anchor/overlay ad and to try the performance of vignette ads.

Show Both Text and Graphical Ads

Be sure to opt-in for displaying both text and graphical ads when creating new AdSense banners. By doing so, you increase the available ad inventory. Most text ads are CPC based (paid on a cost-per-click basis) and most graphical ads are CPM (paid on cost-per-impression). AdSense has an advanced system that determines which ads will give you the highest earnings and by enabling both text and image ads, you will receive the best results.

Gambling Related Ads

By default gambling related ads are turned off by Google AdSense. If your website is targeted at adults, you can change this setting so gambling ads may appear in your site. This can be profitable for certain types of website, and you will have to make that determination yourself. Log into your AdSense account, go to ‘Allow & block ads’, choose your site in the list to the left and click on the tab ‘Sensitive categories’. At the bottom of that page, you can allow gambling related ads.

Interesting Keywords in the First Paragraphs

It’s important to include interesting keywords in the first paragraphs of your webpage content. When the webpage loads and the AdSense banners are requested, Google scans your webpage and determines which ads fit your content best. Google thinks the first paragraphs on your webpage are the most important and that’s why the ads will be based on the keywords in those paragraphs as much as possible. When you are set up to receive banners that fit your content and target audience as well as possible, you increase your revenue while delivering more value to readers.

Load the AdSense Banner with the Highest CTR First

Let’s say you have three AdSense banners on your webpage. Using AdSense, you can see which of those banners has the highest click-through-rate (CTR). It’s a good idea to load the banner with the highest CTR first. The best performing banner should come first in the HTML structure of your page, even if it’s displayed in the middle or at the bottom of the page. The reason behind this? When a page is loaded and the AdSense banners are requested, AdSense fills the first banner with the highest paying ads.

Experiment and Experiment

As all websites are different, it’s important to figure out which ad strategy works best in your case. I recommend trying different banner formats, ad placements, fonts and colors. Even small changes such as color adjustments can make a big difference in how a banner performs. AdSense helps you do these kind of experiments. Log in with your AdSense account and go to My ads > Content > Experiments for more information.

More on AdSense

If you want to read more about Google AdSense and how to optimize your website revenue, I suggest you check out the official Google AdSense blog called Inside AdSense . On the official Google AdSense YouTube channel you’ll also find videos with interesting optimization tips.

Conclusion

Google AdSense is still a great way to monetize websites. AdSense provides a wide range of banner formats from which webmasters can choose. It’s important to integrate AdSense banners into your website layout as seamlessly as possible; ad placement shouldn’t be an afterthought when designing commercial websites. The key to success is to place ads in the places where users spend the most time during their visit: next to or within your main content and near the navigation areas.
Be sure to experiment a lot to find out which ad strategy works best in your case.

10 Tricks to Boost Adsense Earnings; Increasing CPC & CTR

After getting the Google Adsense account approved, the thought that comes to the mind of every blogger is ‘how to optimize adsense ads?’.  After adsense ads starts displaying on our sites, we feel that we have done everything. But, many of them will have CPC of  just 1 to 30 cents. But, if you can optimize the adsense units effectively, you can increase your CPC from mere cents to several dollars.

Adsense Optimization techniques for higher CPC and CTR

1. Change adsense ad layouts to find out which one best suits your site. A placement strategy which works well in one site need not work better in another. So, don’t worry. Just change the ad placement and watch the change in adsense earnings.
2. Use maximum number of available ads(3 standard ad units image/text, 3 link units and search bar) possibly in most of the pages. But, you should do it carefully such that the user should never get a feeling that the site is full of ads.
3. Use more standard text ad units as it gives higher CPC than image ads.
4. Implement highest paying ad sizes(Large Rectangle-336×280, Leaderboard-728×90, Medium Rectangle -300×250 and Wide Skyscraper -160×600).
5. Try different ad layouts in each post. That is, in case of a 300×250 ad unit, if it is placed at the begining of a post, just push it to last in the next post and so on.
6. Change the ad colour in link ad units and text ads(colour used for hyperlink usually give better results).
7. Ad Targeting: If you are using the same ad unit in all pages(eg 728×90 ad), target the ad. It will increase the Cost Per Click(CPC) of that ad unit. For that open adsense homepage. Click on ‘My ads’ tab. Go to ‘Custom channels’. Click on ‘New custom channel’. From there select the ad unit, give a name and tick on Targeting and fill the boxes below. Now, it’s all done. Analyse the changes in earnings in a week or two.
8. Switch to responsive WordPress themes. Since mobile and tablet users are increasing day by day, responsive themes play a crucial role for more traffic and for getting more adsense earnings.
9. Don’t place all the 3 ad units above the fold. This can decrease your adsense CPC.  It is true that you can get more clicks by placing ads at the beginning. But, from my experience it will lower your adsense CPC. Another advantage of this policy is that you can increase your site speed. Lowering Javascript above fold will decrease the page load time and is good for SEO as well.
10. Use responsive adsense ad units. Responsive adsense units are ads that are capable of changing their size according to the maximum available area where the unit is placed. For example, if you have a sidebar 400px in width and you have placed a responsive ad unit there. The ad unit will display 300*600 or 360*280 or 300*250 or other automatically. Moving to responsive ad units will dramatically increase adsense earnings(cpc and clicks) from tablets and Smart phones. I gave these units a try and found it great. But, moving all the  ad units to responsive mode is not a good idea. The only condition you should follow is that never place a responsive ad unit before title. Since when viewed from mobile platform, it will show large ads which is against Adsense TOS(Content should be served first).
Above all this, try to visualize your site as a user visiting the same, and try to exploit the chances so that you get more clicks.(Place ads where they would surely notice). This will surely increase your CTR.
Now, this is my word for you.
“Never get carried away by the success stories of fellow bloggers and website owners. Every one will have their time. Just do experiments on your ad arrangements, wait and see whether it works(say for 3 to 4 days or a week). If it fails, try another. Surely you will see a boost in your adsense earnings soon.”

5 Ways to Increase Your Adsense CTR and CPC

The biggest mistake I see with people who use Adsense as their monetization strategy is that they forget that Adsense is a CPC-based network. You get paid per click, not per print.

Yet, again and again, I see people do not have their ads on their sites to maximize their income potential.

Forget the traffic for now. I will show you how you can close to double your revenue from your existing traffic with some optimization tips that I have picked up over the years.

1. Use all your ad units and make them big

Simple startup.

Use all your ad units. In addition to increasing your chances of a click, this increases the ad space on your site advertisers can bid on and gives you a better overall RPM. You are allowed to use 3 ad units and 3 link units for each page of your site. Although I do not normally use link units at all, I use 3 ad units regardless of the content of my content.

Forget all the other size options that Adsense gives you. Bigger is better. Forget trying to mix it in your content, just make them visible so that people can not miss it. I made thorough test colors and came to a conclusion: the mix is not always the answer. As long as people can see them, they will click on them if that is something they are interested in.

2. Place at least 2 ads in the article content

I know, it's ugly to have mixed ads in your content, but that's where your ads can get the most exposure. I like to place at least 2 ad units in the content itself: 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom.

What works best for me is to put the first ad just below the first paragraph, and the second just after the content.

3. Use red instead of blue.

For the longest period, I had the same color scheme to my site: black text and blue links. It worked.

But I noticed that the use of red links throughout my site instead of blue worked so much better. Maybe it has something to do with people's natural blindness to blue link ads, but red far surpasses blue.

Try to make all the links on your site red, then use the same red color for your Adsense ads. Do not use a bright red, but more of a brown color so your site does not look like it was built in 1999.

4. Use a scrollable ad unit

Google does list this as unauthorized in their policies. However, I have been using it for years and I even had a manual review on my site. Use this at your own risk. This may be case by case. If they see that you are using it to manipulate clicks, you are putting your account at risk.

Ever visit a website and see the ad track you on the page you have scrolled down? The implementation in my websites has greatly improved my CTR and my overall RPM.

Even if you get permission to use it, it's only against strategy if you place it on your content. For example, if you had an ad unit above your job title and covered your content as you scrolled, that would be against the rules.

If you have it in the sidebar, away from any content on the site, you are allowed to use the feature.

For this, I like to use the Q2W3 plugin, which is free for WordPress users. Just activate the plugin, and you'll see an option in your widgets to make them sticky.

Ads on the sidebar are really interesting for Adsense. But with this scrolling plugin, I have improved my CTR sidebar by more than 150%.

The best ad block for this? The giant 300 x 600 large skyscraper ads.

5. Use an ad based on text and image

With Adsense, you are allowed to choose whether your ad unit is based on an image or text. If you're not really in love with an ad type, try using Text & Image.

Using text and image options allows more advertisers to bid (text ad offerings and image ad bids) and increases your overall cost per click.

Do not expect to see an instant CPC jump. In my experience, it's not a huge increase, but over time it pays more per click than a single text ad or a single image.

Conclusion

There are many things you can do to increase Adsense income off of your existing traffic.

While many things with Adsense are out of your control, you can use these optimization tips to experiment with your own site.

AdNow Review: New Way to Monetize Your Website and Get Exposure

Earning from your Website is everyone’s dream, but considering the hardship you experience while getting a good enough ad-network and then getting accepted over there is a real problem isn’t it?
Now when I say a “Good Ad-network”, there are certain metrics you might be thinking of, at least I do:-
  • Easy Acceptance
  • Good CTR rates.
  • Good CPM Rates.
  • Low Withdrawal Threshold
Right? Well if you agree then you’ll definitely want to continue reading this AdNow Review.
Nope I’m no way saying AdNow is the best Ad-network out there or that you need to go and signup with them right now. That would sound so damn promotional, right? Although yeah I do agree I’m promoting AdNow here but not because they look good or they bought me a coffee, but because they’re worth it.
That’s the reason I’m scribbling this AdNow review down, you can just go through it, check what they offer and then decide if you want to start making money with them or not.

What is AdNow?

AdNow as the name suggests is an Ad network. Meant both for Advertisers as well as Publishers. Advertisers can use it to gain exposure to their websites/products/apps, while Publishers can use it to publish ads and make money from their websites and apps.
It’s a platform that was started back in 2014, so no it’s not the “new player in town”. Instead I’m writing this AdNow Review because I stumbled upon the platform just 3 weeks back and I’m already in love with it.

Centered Around Native Ads:-

AdNow is an Ad-network centered and focused with Native Ads, the biggest trend in advertising. Do you really think people click on those sidebar banner ads these days with completely unrelated or “click me’ kinda ads?
The answer lies in asking yourselves when was the last time you clicked on one of those ads? I bet “never’ would be a good guess.
Native ads are what’s taking over the industry. These are ads which can be called the “digital chameleon”. Because they disguise themselves as your website’s native content and hence have an explosive CTR rate.
They do not even look like ads. They might be small widgets giving people a “read more” section or maybe “related products’. The point is they blend in with your website’s content and feel like they are just another piece of content on the website.
And that’s what AdNow is an expert on.

AdNow Review:-Detailed Insight

So by now you know it’s an Ad-Network focused on Native ads. But an AdNow Review means my experiences, its features and a complete walk-through, right? Yeah I’ll get you just that.
Fact:- AdNow servers over 4.2Billion Impressions/month!
Fact:-It has over 900Million monthly users!
Fact:-It’s powering over 190,000 websites worldwide!
So now you know this AdNow review isn’t focused around a tool that was born yesterday but instead something that’s already established, and hence it won’t be a waste of your time.

Startup-Friendly:-

The first point I’m sure you’ll love about AdNow is that it’s not consumed with the “ego problem” most other major Ad networks are guilty of the ego which prevents them from accepting any website below a certain amount of monthly traffic.
AdNow is a startup friendly platform and your website will be accepted even if it’s a new website without a lot of traffic, just if it’s professional, has good content and future potential.

No-Conflict Codes:-

Most major Ad-networks including AdSense don’t let you place or use any other Ad-network alongside their own. So even if the CTR and CPM rates of your Ad-network aren’t good enough you have to put up with them.
Well with AdNow there’s no such condition, you can use its widget codes even if you’re using some other kind of ad-network without any problem.

Ad-Types/Formats:-

You get to choose from quite a number of ad-formats including:-
  • Sidebars
  • In-content
  • End-Content etc.
Because AdNow has been in the industry for quite some time now, hence they know that one ad-format might work for one site while it might be totally useless for the other; hence you get to choose which one you want to go with.

Widget Customization:-

You get to customize your ad-widget just about as extensively as you can imagine. You can choose the types of ads to show, the text, the elements in the widget and what not.
So yeah you get full control with the platform.

Multi-Language Support:-

AdSense despite being one of the top Ad-networks on the planet is highly language sensitive isn’t it? You have this barrier to mostly go with English language sites, or even when other language sites are allowed you don’t get access to the whole ads database right? Some select ads only are shown on.
adnow-multi-language-support
This isn’t the case with AdNow. They support almost all the major languages on the planet without any problem so even if your website doesn’t have English as it’s primary language it’s not a problem.
country

Payment Terms:-

This matters, a lot right? And this is one of the prime reasons why I’m writing this AdNow review. For the simple fact, the payment terms were more than agreeable.
First of all, they’ve a minimum threshold of $20! That’s like super-achievable with their CPM rates. If that’s not enough, they also have a Net-7 payment system. Means they pay every 7 days, every week yeah!
So meaning if you join today, you can be cashing out in the next 7 days!
And as far as Withdrawing the money is concerned, I’d say they support two of the most convenient payment receiving methods:-
  • Paypal
  • Wire-transfer.
Now I agree that’s not a “lot” of options, but these options are enough! Having 10 complicated options isn’t a good idea when you can have just two, and both of which super-convenient right?
Not to mention their good enough, acceptable CTR rates of around 1% which makes achieving these numbers super easy.
The screenshot below shows it does make money.
report

Types (Quality) of Ads:-

All ads which popup on your sites are moderated by real human moderators before being accepted, so you can be sure that there won’t be any kind of Porn, Gambling or illegal/illicit kind of ads involved.

Final Verdict:-

So yeah that just about sums up this AdNow review folks, now hey I get it this being an AdNow review you might not believe every word I say, cause hey this might just as well be a sponsored post for all you know, right?
So I’d say a much better bet for you would be to just go at http://adnow.com/publishers and try out AdNow Publisher for yourselves, even if the other Ad networks weren’t as friendly, I assure you the reception you’d get from AdNow would be totally different.

How to Change Payee Name & Country in Adsense Account?

As an Adsense publisher, until a few years ago, you could not change payee name and country in your Google Adsense account, but now it’s possible to change these both. The reason is; because Google has expanded the options and features in its Adsense program over the last years and months, so that publishers can utilize all the options available to them. Let’s see how we can change payee name and country in Adsense account.

How to Change Adsense Payee Name?

In order to change the payee name or add another payee name to your Adsense account, you’ll have to login to your Adsense account and then follow below steps, there is a screenshot below the steps:
  • Click the “Gear Option” gear on top right of your Adsense dashboard
  • Click “Payments” and then click “Payee Profile“
  • On the footer of the page, you’ll see “Billing Contacts“
  • You can add a new contact or can edit the existing one
See below pictures for taking the steps in your Adsense account. I’ve highlighted the steps in red circles.

The above information means, you can easily change your Adsense Payee name and also you can add another person to collect the payment. It was not possible a few years ago, and many people were worried about mistakes in their payee names which they entered in the Adsense account at first place. However, it will not be the future case.

How to Change Country in Adsense Account?

You can change country in Adsense account, but not all publishers can change the country. The reason which Google mentioned on their help pages was exactly like this:
Reason #1: The payment currency in your account currently isn’t available as a payment currency in your new country.
Reason #2: You’re changing your country to a country outside of your contracting entity.
Now the above lines are very difficult to understand, but what I got out of it was that you can’t change your country if your new country doesn’t support the payment currency which you previously had in your account. For example, if you had USD in your account as currency and now you want to move to Japan then USD is not a payment currency in Japan, so you won’t be able to do this.
And the second line says something about contracting entity, that’s mean your Adsense account is associated with a Google entity which might either be in Ireland, United States, Singapore or China. The Singapore office actually handles all the payments and other Adsense related issues for South Asian and Southeast Asian publishers. In this case, if you want to change your country to another region like from Singapore to Ireland  then it won’t work (Ireland office handles the European countries).
I hope, I’ve explained something in which you might have been interested, if you have any questions regarding this post in particular or related to Adsense in general then you can ask that in the comment section below. I’ll be there to answer all of your questions within a few hours.
